The study is the latest delving into the mind-body connection to suggest that expressing emotions about a traumatic experience in a coherent way may be important to not just mental but physical health as well. It showed that the calming effect of writing can cut physical wound healing time nearly in half.
Researchers led by Elizabeth Broadbent, a senior lecturer in health psychology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, studied 49 healthy senior citizens, aged 64 to 97. For three days, half were assigned to write for 20 minutes a day about the most traumatic event they had experienced, and were encouraged to be as open and candid as they could about exactly what they felt and thought at the time. If possible, they were also asked to share thoughts or emotions that they had never expressed to others about what they had undergone.

Dr Rod Gutierrez, the head of psychological-based safety programs offered by DuPont Sustainable Solutions, says most Australian companies adopt a zero tolerance approach to bullying – and plough expensive resources into prosecuting or counseling offenders.
A parliamentary inquiry into workplace bullying is currently underway but Dr Gutierrez said research was showing that the usual systems of dealing with the problem might actually be ineffective.

22 April 2012 Today is Earth Day, and as I read about all of the celebratory events occurring in my area, I find myself pondering the real meaning of the day. The first Earth Day was recognized in 1970 and came to fruition largely as the result of the efforts of Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin who was disturbed by the 1969 Union Oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara and inspired by Vietnam War protests. Nelson imagined Earth Day to be a large-scale teach-in and day of national protest.
Spring is brief where I live in Maine. It comes late and fast. For years I didn’t truly appreciate it because it was a far cry from the springs I was used to in Pennsylvania, where April birdsong was almost deafening and the abundance of colorful flowers kaleidoscopic. Here in Maine, there are certainly songbirds and flowers, but many fewer and much less spectacular than in Pennsylvania. But those days of missing the springs of the mid-Atlantic states have diminished as I’ve come to marvel at the abundance of amazing spring happenings here in Maine. In the past week I’ve seen the seals return to bask on the rocks at low tide and dozens of pairs of mergansers float by close to shore. For years, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has released generalized information on the food industry’s compliance, or non-compliance, with labeling regulations. Since CFIA allows manufacturers a 20 percent fudge factor in what they put on their labels, a reasonable consumer might expect compliance to be high. Differences in testing equipment and batches of ingredients can make it difficult to provide exact percentages, but 20 percent is more than adequate wiggle room for telling consumers what they are eating.

Republicans like to point out that they don’t oppose VAWA, they just oppose making sure VAWA protections extend to undocumented women and members of the LGBT community. This is despite uncontested evidence that threat of deportation is often used as a means of keeping women in an abusive and sometimes deadly domestic relationship. And it’s also despite the fact that what we’re talking about here is recognition and protection of basic human rights for all women.

Arizona held a ceremonial signing to celebrate the passage of House Bill 2213, which officially removes the words “mental retardation” and “crippled” from the Arizona Revised Statutes. Governor Jan Brewer had signed the bill back in April and the legislation will go into effect on September 30. The word “mental retardation” will be replaced with “intellectual disability” and the word “crippled” with “physically disabled” in state statutes.
